“We lived on my salary and spent Herbie’s on art.” Dorothy Vogel
Dr. Brad Collins discusses the 50 works gifted to the Museum
from Herbert and Dorothy Vogel. They began collecting in the
1960s and by 1996 were listed by ARTnews as one of the world’s
top 200 collectors – all on the salary of a librarian and a postal
worker. Their collection comprised more than 3600 works,
highlighting minimalist and conceptual artists working in the
1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s. Now age 85 and 73, they have become the
example of savvy art collectors and a beacon to those art lovers
of modest means. Collins is an associate professor of art history
at the University of South Carolina. FREE courtesy BlueCross

The MINImuseum of Richard McMahan was an exhibition of over
1,100 works of miniature art in the Piccolo Spoleto Invitational
Exhibition. Curated by the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art
and set in the College of Charleston Addlestone Library, the
exhibition was designed and built in one semester by the
Clemson Architecture Center in Charleston (CAC.C). Robert Miller
shares the story of a design/build project in which laser
technology used for making models was ported to execute
full-scale fabrication with a CNC router. Ten students and two
professors first mapped and organized the works; then designed
and built a single snaking wall to contain and showcase them.
