RECENT ACQUISITION Collectors Circle Purchases Goya Print for the Museum At their annual meeting on July 22, members of the Collectors Circle voted to acquire for the Museum a ?rst edition print by the 18th-century Spanish artist Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828). The meeting marks the culmination of a year of travel to museums, art galleries, private collectors and art dealers to learn more about museums, collecting and the art world, and to select objects to be considered for purchase using their dues. The print by Goya, titled “She who is ill wed never misses a chance to say so,” is from the last of his four major print series called Los Proverbios. Conceived between 1815-1824, the prints in this series were not published until 1864 (after the artist’s death), probably due in part to their pointed social commentary. The series was published under the title Los Proverbios, although Goya’s own captions for the working proofs include the word “disparates,” meaning “follies.” Even with the titles, the meanings of the images remain enigmatic, however an overall feeling of pessimism and sharp social commentary pervades the group as in our image where the ‘ill wed’ woman is physically bound to her husband. Surrounded by dark and ghastly personages, the couples’ double feet reference their union and their desire to separate.
