Sassda Awards honours industry leaders

By Ilana Koegelenberg

The 2016 Sassda Columbus Stainless Steel Awards has announced a record 39 world-class winners , including Transfrig and HC Heat Exchangers .

The Southern Africa Stainless Steel Development Association ( Sassda ) winners were drawn from a wider spectrum of sectors due to an expansion in the number of categories . This stems from a desire to broaden the scope of categories to ensure they are fully representative of the depth and diversity of the industry . In addition , not only were the awards oversubscribed in terms of sponsors , but they also exceeded all expectations in terms of the number of entries , which increased from 43 in 2014 to 144 in 2016 .
Looking at the enhanced stature of this year ’ s awards , Sassda executive director John Tarboton says , “ After the huge increase in the number of entries and winners as well as the number of categories , we truly feel that the aim of the awards has been realised , namely , to boost the growth and development of the local stainless steel sector . The hype created around the awards also means they ’ ve been invaluable in terms of raising awareness of stainless steel and its myriad of uses and applications within the local and global economy .”
In tandem with the increased number of entries and winners , the awards ’ judging panel was doubled in size to
12 industry experts from the fabrication , architectural , environmental , catering , and welding sectors , to name but a few .
Transfrig Among the companies honoured for their contribution to the industry was local builder of transport refrigeration units , Transfrig . Transfrig was the runnerup in both the product development category and the environmental category at the 2016 Sassda Columbus Stainless Steel Awards for their truck refrigeration system that uses a 1 000l stainless steel cryogenic vessel . " Transfrig is proud to be part of any ‘ going green ’ initiative ,” Peter Solomon , managing director of Transfrig , commented .
HC Heat Exchangers HC Heat Exchangers was the joint first runner up in the food and beverages category for their heat exchangers built for Dale Spiral Systems . They also received the second runner up award in the engineering category for the heat exchangers they supplied to Diesel Electric .
“ It ’ s with great pride that the HC team is recognised for our continuous strive to improve ourselves and push the boundaries of development ,” said Robert Kruger , managing director of HC Heat Exchangers . “ Thank you Sassda for this recognition .” CLA
