CoffeeShop Blues "The Spells" By: Gary L. Morton A Frightlibrary.org book. 2014. I gotta admit when I started reading this book there were a couple things that came across to me as uber hokey, and one of them was the "evil" heat spells that are referred to in the book’s title. The book is set in a future version of Toronto, with high security high rises, robots, near zombie drug addict gang members, an underground prison, and a super villain known as "the Doctor." Which means, I can't claim that the hokey ever goes away entirely, but I didn't care. It was a fun read. If I were to try and classify the book I'd say it felt like it was one third comic book, one third detective novel, and one third James Bond novel. The addict gangsters known as Blues made me think of the recent Crocodile epidemic in Russia. The Doctor felt like he was part comic book character, part Bond-esque Villain. Nevertheless, the author kept the action consistent, and the pace always on the move. This book was an enjoyable read. 146
