Students get the Blues
Erin Young is one
of many school
leavers in the Tweed
who have chosen
the hospitality industry
for a career, and the
decision may well turn
out to be very wise.
Following the wellreported slide in the
value of the Australian dollar, the tourism
and hospitality industry in the Tweed
and SE Queensland is facing a welcome
boost, with Australian tourists choosing to
stay local and international tourists seeing
more value offered by an Australian
destination.
With a particular interest in event
management, Erin completed her
Certificate II in Tourism and Events through
North Coast TAFE as part of her Higher
School Certificate, which gave her both
work experience and an entry into the
industry.
“Since finishing school I’ve worked for Twin
Towns Clubs and Resorts, where I‘ve be
able to gain experience in a number of
areas of hospitality, along with other work
placement opportunities on events such
as the BLEACH Festival, Roxy & Quicksilver
Pro, Australian Long Board Open Titles
and Cooly Rocks On,” said Erin.
“This experience has definitely enabled
me to grow and also develop a clear
perspective of the career pathway I am
hoping to achieve,” said Erin.
Recently, Erin decided to return to
TAFE to enrol in the Diploma in Event
Management. She re-thought it when she
learnt of an opportunity to ‘upgrade’ the
qualification. North Coast TAFE’s Kingscliff
Campus was offering a ‘Triple Diploma’
package with qualifications across the
program areas of hospitality, events and
business, and Erin says that she saw the
value in the offering.
For more information about the Triple Diploma
package or any courses in either hospitality, events
or business at North Coast TAFE, people can go to
