TRAVEL
THE FESTIVALS OF
EUROPE:
No matter what
time of year you go to Europe - there’s
always a festival somewhere It’s well
worth doing a little research to see if
there are any festivals on during the
time of your visit and in the countries you
will visit. There’s some really well-know
festivals like Munich’s “Oktoberfest” held every Sep/Oct and involving lots
of eating, drinking, entertainment and
the gut-twirling rides of the fairground.
Others are a little more refined - like the
Scotland’s “Edinburgh Tattoo” - held
each year in August.
Here there’s a great cross-section or
arts, music, dance and various other
cultural events. It’s one of the largest
festivals in the world and well worth a
visit. For those who are a little more thrillseeking - there’s always Pamplona’s
“Running of the Bulls” festival held in
July of each year. Party-goers who
have had too much to eat and drink
think they can out-run 500kg fighting
bulls who haven’t! This festival can be
fun - as long as you don’t run! While still
in Spain - there’s “La Tomatina” held in
the little Andalusian town of Bunyol.
It’s estimated that each year around
150,000 tonnes of squashed tomatoes
are thrown during the 1-hour event.
Across Europe - many small villages
and large towns have various
“Harvest” festivals to celebrate a good
year of agriculture. If you do some
research - you could well have many
great memories of a festival. Check
