It’s the only country with LOVE in it’s name!! Formerly part of Yugoslavia, and before that part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, the country now enjoys a surge in tourism due to it’s Mediterranean climate, alpine region for climbing, fast-flowing rivers for kayaking and rafting and Adriatic coastline for watersports (even if only 34kms!). Ljubljana, the capital, is a bustling large town, with a vibrant student population and lively atmosphere. Dominated by a fortress, the township lines both banks of the Ljubljanitsa River, and with pedestrian zones, local markets, restaurants and cafes, provides plenty for the visitor to explore. Just 45kms away is the lakeside town of Bled, on a lake of the same name and with Slovenia’s only island. The “Pearl of Slovenia” is perhaps the most popular destination visitors. Just another 40km on is the resort township or Kranjska Gora, popular for winter skiing and in the summer, gateway to the Julian Alps. Maribor, in the east, is noted for it’s cavernous underground wine cellar housing more than 4 million bottles of wine. The underground caves at Postojna are the 4th largest in the world and worth a visit. On the Adriatic coast the ports of Piran and Portoroz attract holiday-makers from all over Europe. For horse-lovers, the nearby town of Lipica is where the famous Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School were originally bred and get their name. Slovenia is 1.5hrs from Venice, and 2 hours from Salzburg. For more information or to make bookings in Slovenia, contact Travel Direct of Kingscliff at (02) 6674-2577.
