Lauren has created these artworks as part of her Advanced Diploma in Sculpture which she is currently studying at Murwillumbah TAFE. Lauren says “ The artworks that I have made over the past two years has an underlying theme relating to local social issues, mental health, drug and alcohol addictions, domestic violence and in particular homelessness.” Lauren has lived all her life in the local area and has witnessed first hand the direct link between social dysfunction and an increase in homeless people living in the area. The artworks are made of newspaper and represent fragility, where if left they will slowly breakdown but still leave a presence. A small box accompanies the figures inviting people to share their own personal stories or make a comment that the sculptures evoke. “By displaying the works over National Homeless Week, I had hoped to bring this issue out of the shadows and into the light. By asking others to share their stories, I can highlight how thin the line is between those of us who have a home and those that do not.” Lauren will exhibit her full works of art at the Coolamon Cultural Gallery on the 18th and 19th of October. 4 > COFFEE SHOP GOSS > FINGAL TO POTTSVILLE > OCTOBER 2013
