Thinking about an escape from the summer
heat? Maybe you should consider a quick
trip to Japan for some skiing.
Jetstar offers direct flights from Coolangatta
to Tokyo daily. There is no jetlag, because
the time difference is just two hours.
The slopes in Japan are amongst the best
in the world: long, picturesque runs, with
deep, fluffy coverage virtually guaranteed.
Perfect for learners, there are English
speaking instructors and wide, gentle slopes,
with lots of short lifts to get you to the top
again. There is plenty for more experienced
skiers, with the Sohoro area in the north,
getting some of the best deep powder you
will ever come across. During the week, the
slopes are virtually empty, and although it
does get a little busier on weekends when
the locals come out to play, long queues
are rarely seen, and move with typical
Japanese efficiency.
A favourite area is Hakuba village, a few
hours overland from Tokyo. Hakuba sits at
the base of the Happo–One ski field, and
offers a free shuttle service to eight other ski
fields in the area. The village is pretty, and
offers a wide range of accommodation
and restaurants to suit all travellers.
