RE-ENACTMENT OF THE GALLIPOLI
LANDING
My
Grandfather,
John
Lumb,
volunteered to join the Royal Navy in
1939 at the age of 21. He was discharged
as a Petty Officer in 1945 having served
his country for the entire period of World
War II.
Granddad served on three ships: HMS
‘Valorous’ – a VW class destroyer which
was deployed for North Sea and Atlantic
convoy defence and anti-invasion
patrols; HMS ‘Suffolk’ – a Kent class
heavy 8” cruiser which was deployed for
convoy escort movements and later in
the Pacific theatre; and HMS ‘Myrmidon’
– an Algerine class minesweeper that
entered operational service after VJ
Day (2nd Sept ‘45) deployed for mine
clearance operations.
Granddad was also involved in the
Normandy landings in June 1944 and
the liberation of France. In particular, he
was involved in the heavy fighting that
centred around the city of Caen. For
this service he received a ‘Certificate
of Recognition’ from the French
Government in April 2000.
On Anzac Day I’ll be honouring ALL
veterans, and I’ll be wearing Granddad’s
medals with pride, strengthened by his
quiet courage and valour.
