KHP partners with PTA for 5K run fitness on Nichols Recruits Students at BGSU Dr. Justin K. Nichols, lecturer in Sport Leadership, joined representatives from Ball State University, Eastern Dr. Justin K. Nichols Michigan University, University of Indianapolis, Tiffen University, and Bowling Green State University at the first Sport Management Alliance Graduate Program Fair at Bowling Green State University. Nichols’ purpose at the Graduate Program Fair, which organizers hope to plan annually, was to promote the University of Kentucky, the College of Education, and the Sport Leadership emphasis within the Kinesiology & Health Promotion Department. Dr. Nichols used this opportunity to recruit students for Sport Leadership. “This concept is commonly used in athletics but I have always looked toward models of best practices within the field. We are coaches of the classroom. We have a game plan for each and every class. We challenge our students and motivate them to achieve a personal level of success. Recruiting is an area of crossover between athletics and academics that we do not utilize frequently. We want to continually strive toward being a top 20 institution and getting our name out there is just one more pathway to this success.” COE COMMUNICATOR | SEPTEMBER 2014 The UK College of Education Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion is partnering with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in Fayette County to provide health and fitness expertise for its annual 5K program. “This is the third year the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion (KHP) will be working with this fun, health-promoting event,” says Dr. Melinda Ickes, assistant professor. “I encourage everyone to get involved, either as a participant, an advocate, or a volunteer.” Ickes is working with the 16th District PTA to implement and promote programs and events associated with the race.  She has an 8-week training program designed for teens and adults who want to walk/ run their very first 5K and/or who need a little help getting back into being active The program is held three times a week at various locations in Lexington.
