UK Partnership Receives Federal Grant for Health Education Project
Collaborators from the UK colleges of Education and Agriculture , Food , and Environment have received a $ 159,586 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture ’ s National Institute of Food and Agriculture for a health education curriculum and professional development project for students in kindergarten through eighth grade .
Dr . Elizabeth Fettrow-Whitney , a UK College of Education assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion , and Nicole Peritore , a senior extension specialist with the College of Agriculture , Food and Environment , will collaborate on the project .
The overall goal is to equip students with knowledge and tools that will benefit their mental and physical health , and ultimately lead to reductions in the prevalence of behaviors related to poor mental and physical health .
The project will consist of the development of standards-based health education curricula for use by K-8 Department of Defense Education Activity teachers . It will focus on mental health and the prevention of alcohol , tobacco , and other drug use .
Fettrow-Whitney is a third-year assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion . She teaches undergraduate courses in health education ( teacher education ) and health promotion , including KHP 380 : Health in the Elementary School ; KHP 330 : Planning and Implementing School Health Programs ; and KHP 270 : Introduction to Health Education and Health Promotion . She also supervises health education student teachers .
Peritore is a senior extension specialist in the Family and Consumer Science Extension , the primary outreach arm of the School of Human Environmental Sciences . In her role , she provides research and evidence-based programming for various health topics to family and consumer science agents in all 120 counties in Kentucky .

Ickes Chosen for SEC Travel Program

Dr . Melinda Ickes has been selected to take part in the 2016-17 Southeastern Conference ( SEC ) faculty travel program . She is among nine faculty participating from the University of Kentucky , and more than 100 faculty members from all 14 Southeastern Conference universities .
Ickes is an associate professor in the UK College of Education ’ s Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion .
The program , in its fifth year , provides support for selected individuals to collaborate with colleagues at other SEC member institutions . Through the program , the SEC provides financial assistance for its faculty members to travel to other SEC universities to exchange ideas , develop grant proposals , conduct research , and deliver lectures or performances .
