Town of Cochrane Strategic Plan – Final Report October 2014
Currently, CDSSAB (based in Timmins, but with responsibility for Cochrane) has initiated a 10year Housing Plan to address concerns around availability, affordability and homelessness.18 The
Steering Committee overseeing this Plan is researching options for studying, quantifying and
addressing the matter. Cochrane Mayor Peter Politis represents the town’s interests on this plan.
In Cochrane there are 2,245 occupied private dwellings, down from 2,281 in 2006. Nearly three
quarters (71%) of dwellings were owned and 29% were rented (Figure 4.7). This is exact to the
provincial figures of 71% owned and 29% rented.
The median monthly payment for dwelling owners was $798 in 2006, much lower than the
provincial median of $1046. Similarly, renters in Cochrane had a median monthly payment of
$498, significantly lower than the provincial median of $801. However, given the increase in
economic activity in the Town and broader region, and perceived increase in demand for
affordable housing and rental accommodations, these figures may not accurately reflect the
monthly costs observed today.
