Town of Cochrane Strategic Plan – Final Report October 2014 These differences may be the outcome of a number of possible factors: • Higher smoking rates than in the rest of the province. • Higher alcohol consumption. • Higher rates of Type II Diabetes. • Lower literacy rates than in the rest of Ontario and much of Canada. 4.1.4 Household Characteristics Sixty-four percent of the population in Cochrane is married or living with a common-law partner, while the remaining 36% has never married, or has been divorced/separated, or widowed (Figure 4.5). Both of these statistics are consistent with the provincial averages, 58% and 42% respectively.14 Figure 4.5: Marital Status in Cochrane (2011) 36% 64% Married or living with a common-law partner Not married and not living with a common-law partner Cochrane has 1,610 families living in private households,15 where a family is defined as: • Married couples (with or without children of either and/or both spouses). • Common-law couples (with or without children of either and/or both partners). • Lone-parent families. The majority of households have one or two people.
