The strategy I use is stretching people out of their comfort zone. This is important for my clients who want to become better leaders. We (coach and client) discover the leadership development needs and agree on coaching outcomes in terms of competencies needed or leadership style desired. Then we start working on tasks that are not in the client’s comfort zone. Examples of these tasks include mentoring new people, working on new projects, taking special assignments, voluntarily trying new work and leading new teams. 22 Coaching World A hint: When a leader tells you that he or she could do task “x,” try to ask some stretching questions, such as, “Is that all that you can do? Really?” And give them a stretching pause that will make them think outside their comfort zone.
