“What is one
strategy that you
use to support
your clients’
development as
leaders?”
“The strategy I use is
stretching people out of their
comfort zone.”
We learn by doing! The strategy I use is
stretching people out of their comfort zone.
This is important for my clients who want to
become better leaders. We (coach and client)
discover the leadership development needs
and agree on coaching outcomes in terms
of competencies needed or leadership style
desired. Then we start working on tasks that
are not in the client’s comfort zone.
Examples of these tasks include mentoring
new people, working on new projects, taking
special assignments, voluntarily trying new
work and leading new teams.

A hint: When a leader tells you that he or she
could do task “x,” try to ask some stretching
questions, such as, “Is that all that you can
do? Really?” And give them a stretching
pause that will make them think outside their
comfort zone.
