David (Bandy) Allen Prater, Resident of the Month Bandy came into this world like a tornado! While traveling to Texas, his parents, David and Florene Prater, encountered a storm in Seminole, Okla. At the time, his mom was seven months pregnant. As a tornado whipped through the area, Florene’s water broke. On Oct. 7,1958, David was born in the parking lot of the local hospital. Bandy has had a lot of heartache in his life. He is resilient, hardheaded and set in his ways. He calls himself the “master of all trades and a master of nothing.” Growing up, Bandy loved working with animals. He attended school in Bowie, Texas. At the age of 14, Bandy was a David Prater member of the North Texas Rodeo Association. While in the rodeo, Bandy would go on to work as a bull fighter and rodeo clown, winning numerous championships and titles. He attended college at the Sul Ross University in Texas, where he earned a degree in Equine Veterinarian Medicine and Animal Husbandry. Bandy served our country in the Second Battalion A Battery 82 nd Air born Infantry as a sniper. After taking a short leave, he returned to the armed forces as a member of the National Guard. Bandy has had a variety of jobs through out his lifetime. He spent time training and showing horses and other livestock. He worked as a welder in the oil fields. He was a fireman and EMT. A desire to give back would eventually lead Bandy to become a Shrine Clown. While there, he would become a sponsor for many children at the Shiner’s Hospitals. In August 2014, Bandy joined the Citizens Memorial Healthcare Family. He enjoys to spend his time visiting, attending the men’s lunches, watching television and working on leather projects. Thank you, Bandy, for sharing your story, and congratulations for being selected as the CMHCF Resident of the Month for May.
