Locust St., Bolivar, MO 65613, 417-326-7648 Joe Hubbert R e s i d e n t o f t h e M o n t h Joe Hubbert was born April 7, 1942, to Steve and Frances Hubbert in Karlin, Missouri. Joe is the oldest of four siblings, Mary, Steven, and Rita. Joe’s parents were labored farmers tending to crops and milking cows. He attended Elm Grove rural school for 5 years which was near Karlin and later graduated from Bolivar schools. Joe served in the Army from 1960-1967 where he worked in fire direction control and field intelligence. He was stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Before going into active duty, a friend of his who was attending nursing school at St. Johns hospital in Springfield invited him to a dance to meet some female nursing students. He noticed a beautiful black haired young lady named Rae who he asked to dance. He then asked her out on a date to a hamburger restaurant around the corner from her school and that began their courtship. The couple dated for a year, were engaged for three years and then married Oct. 3, 1964. Joe said the highlight of his life was marrying the love of his life Rae and the birth of their four children, Andy, Chuck, Sarah and Karla. He spent most of his life working on his 205 acre farm baling hay and milking around 120 head of cattle. His passion has always been farming and it shows through his many hobbies and the community involvement he has had over the years. He has been a member of the Polk County Fair Board for fifty plus years where he served as dairy superintendent. He showed Brown Swiss cattle and Ayrshire cattle for several years and helped start the Ayrshire show at the Springfield, Missouri fair and the Missouri State Fair. He was a member and head of communications for the Polk County Cattlemen Association, a member of the Missouri Cattleman Association and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. He also helped start Vanguard Milk Company where he was board secretary and superintendent. Joe was self-employed for 28 years building grade A barns. He also enjoyed constructing his own home in 1964. He spent 10-15 years as an over the road truck driver where he drove for several different local friends hauling hay, feeder pigs and box freight coast to coast. When we asked him to tell us something that people would not know about him, he jokingly said that everyone probably knows more about him than he does. He has always been a jokester. In fact, he performed on the Ozark Country Jubilee as a comedian named, Snuffy for a couple of years on their traveling show. He also mentioned that he has always loved to square dance and has even done a little polka dancing. He learned to square dance before meeting Rae and taught her how to dance. He said he would call square dances every time he had a chance. His favorite hobbies are fishing, gardening, mowing the yard and of course, square dancing. Joe joined our CMHCF family in October 2019, and said some of his favorite things to do here are playing bingo, visiting with people and spending time outside. Congratulations Joe on being chosen as CMHCF’s resident of the month. Are you a caring individual who would like to assist in caring for the elderly?
