Mary “Frances” Thomason
Resident of the Month
Mary “Frances” Thomason was born Jan. 6, 1929, in Polk
County, Missouri, to Harry and Martha Ahart. The family owned
80 acres of farm land near Adonis, Missouri, where they milked
cattle and planted and harvested corn. Frances had two brothers
and three sisters. Her siblings have all passed away except for her
youngest sister, Juanita, who lives in Bolivar.
Frances attended a small country school through the 8 th grade
in Huron, Missouri. When she was 17 years old she began going
door to door selling magazines. She called the local taxi for a ride
to her first stop. That is where she met her future husband, Thom-
as Thomason, the taxi cab driver. Thomas was twenty years her
senior. Before Frances got out of the car, he asked her out on a
date. She recalls going to a drive-in movie on that date. She fell
in love with his good personality and how loving and caring he
was to her. She thought since he was so much older, he would know more and be able to
take good care of her. Her parents liked him a lot. After dating for a couple of months in
1946, Frances and Thomas drove to Kansas City and got married by the justice of the peace.
Thomas was from California and six months after their marriage, the couple decided to
move to San Diego. Her parents moved with them, but they only lived there for a year be-
fore deciding to move back to Missouri. Thomas and Frances called California home for ten
years before they moved back to Missouri.
After moving back home, Frances worked at the garment factory in Bolivar for 21 years,
pressing clothing until they closed. She worked another 10 years at the garment factory in
Stockton, Missouri. Later, she washed dishes at Mom’s Deli in Bolivar. Thomas drove a
school bus for several years for Bolivar schools, where he retired. The couple were married a
wonderful 25 years before he passed away from a heart attack.
Thomas and Frances were blessed with a wonderful daughter, Jane, and one granddaugh-
ter, Brandy. Frances has many wonderful memories of her daughter who passed away in
2004 from cancer. “The birth of Jane and watching her grow up were the highlights of my
life,” said Frances. She enjoyed trips with her to the beaches in the Bahamas and Mexico
over the years. Her granddaughter is in the Army and is stationed in the beautiful state of
Hawaii. Frances has always wanted to visit there.
Frances always had a large garden full of potatoes, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers and
green beans. She spent a lot of time canning beans and tomatoes and making pickles in the
summer. Hoeing the garden was always her least favorite thing to do but, it was nice to be
able to eat what you had worked so hard on during the summer.
Frances has always considered sight-seeing a favorite hobby of hers. Just driving around
and seeing everything there is to see is relaxing. She also has quite a display in her room of
her collection of sun catchers that she has collected throughout the years. She enjoys listen-
ing to country music and recalls times when Thomas and she would go two stepping
(dancing). For the past eleven years, Sammy, her Yorkie has been a bright spot in her life.
She loves it when he comes to visit her.
Frances became part of our CMHCF family in August 2019. Her favorite part about be-
ing here is the friendliness of the staff and residents. She enjoys going on outings, attending
music events and playing bingo.
Congratulations, Frances, on being chosen as CMHCF’s Resident of the Month!
