Peggy Buckmaster, Resident of the Month Peggy Buckmaster was born on Dec. 17, 1939. She was raised in Kensington, London, England. Her parents were Samuel and Winifred Nicholls. She grew up there during wartime. She had two brothers and a sister. She started school when she was only 3 years old. Most of the children started at a very young age back then during the war. Many mothers worked in ammunition plants. Her mother did domesticate work. She went to school until she was 15 years old. She then had to work to help support the family. Peggy Buckmaster It was hard times and interesting too. She recalls one time she and some of her friends were out running around and it was a common site to see bombed out buildings. There was this single brick wall standing, and her friends dared her to go up it. Of course if you know Peggy, what do you think she did? Yes, she went up that wall, broken brick steps all the way to the top. Once up there however, she could not come down. Her friends had to call the fire department to come help. She was not looking forward to seeing her mother after this stunt. Peggy said growing up she loved sports and swimming. One time she was practicing and they noticed a tall skinny guy working out there. He ended up being Rodger Banister, an Olympic champion who was the first man to win the four minute mile run. When she was 22 years old she met a young American man by the name of John Buckmaster. She followed him to the states where they were soon married. Together they had five children. After living in the states for about 14 years, Peggy went back to England for a visit. She and her friend walked forever. She loved visiting all the museums, and landmarks, and said that you could go see the castles and it never cost a fee to get in. Peggy has many things she enjoyed doing over the years including swimming, knitting and crocheting. But when you get down to it she loves to read! Here at CMHCF she loves all the activities, enjoys playing games and Bingo. Peggy likes to help others and enjoys her new friends here. But she still spends many hours with her nose in a good book. Congratulations to Peggy on being the Resident of the Month of December!
