Amelia Manes,
Resident of the Month
Amelia was born Sept. 7, 1940, to Clyde and Mollie
Stockton in Everton, Mo. She said she’s not sure, but it would be
neat to think that her father’s family were the ones that founded
the Stockton Lake area. Her mother moved to Colorado at age 4
from Germany. Amelia has one older brother, Ivan, and one
younger brother, Adren. Amelia said her great-grandfather, who
came to America from England, was a lord of high court in Eng-
land.
Amelia attended Stockton school then moved to Eudora, later
moving to Morrisville. She enjoyed playing volleyball during
school and she remembers her first car was a VW bug. Amelia
loved that car so much she bought a new black one with rumble
seats. Remembering back when she was a child, two things
come to mind that she loved: her father read the Bible to them
every night and her mother taught her how to sew. She loved to
sew so much she continued making quilts and crocheting. She
shared that she made sure she made her daughter-in-laws something first.
One of Amelia’s favorite things she did growing up was when her mother would give her an old can
and some eggs and they would go down by the Stockton river, before it was made into a lake, and they
would get water from the river, build a fire and cook the eggs for a picnic. She discovered big flat rocks
they would slide on into the water. She said they used to have goats to clear the timber and one day they
were following her and she became scared so she picked up a rock and threw it at the billy goat to scare
him off. She didn’t know if she hit it or not, but when her father came home that night he asked if anyone
knew what happened to it, he said “it’s eye had been put out by something.”

E mpowered Amelia met her husband, Bob, after school, but he was sent into the Army. They wrote to each other
for two years, and then he returned to her. They were married soon after and had two wonderful sons,
Rusty and Robin. The couple had several wonderful years together until he passed away in 2004. Bob’s
heritage was Native American, which they cherished in the ways they lived. The couple mostly lived
around the Aldrich area, and enjoyed camping, fishing, playing horse shoes, and living off the land. They
even camped so much they put a phone out on one of the telephone poles so their family could reach
them if needed. Amelia has two sons, seven grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. She’s worked in
café’s, our local Teeters, and the garment factory in Bolivar where she became a supervisor.
Together, we are CMH PRIDE! Amelia has been a part of the CMHCF family since March 2017. She enjoys everything about being
here. “There are so many great people that work here and I’ve made new friends. The food is delicious
and there are so many choices,” she said. Congratulations Amelia, on being resident of the month.
