AUTHOR PROFILES ENTERTAINMENT FEDERATION UNIVERSITY STAGE 2017 is the twentieth anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone! To celebrate the birth of the ‘boy who lived’ at Booktown we have selected a spread of magical entertainment and enchanting activities. ACTIVITIES PROFESSOR ANDREW J. MAY is Professor of History in the School of Historical & Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne. He has published widely on the historical condition of Australian cities, their public spaces and cultures as well as their myths and rituals. His Melbourne Street Life (1998) was an early study utilising the street as a frame for the historical analysis of the urban experience, and he has guided development of the Encyclopedia of Melbourne. PROFESSOR JOHN MCDONALD is a Professor in Sociology and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education and Arts at Federation University Australia. He focuses on opening up access to, and successful participation in, tertiary education for students from regional areas and low socio-economic backgrounds; establishing collaborative research programs that are deeply engaged with partner organisations; and community-university engagement. DAVID MCGINNISS is currently writing a history of the community organisation Child and Family Services Ballarat (CAFS), including its predecessor organisations the Ballarat Orphanage and Ballarat Children’s Homes, dating back to 1865, as part of a PhD with the Collaborative Research Centre in Australian History at Federation University. MAGICAL DRESS UP PARADE (Saturday only) Come dressed as one of your favourite characters from a magical book and be a part of a procession of witches, wizards, fairies, talking rabbits and other mysterious beings. Spot prizes for greatest costumes. 26 CLUNES BOOKTOWN FESTIVAL 2017 PROFESSOR KEIR REEVES holds a research chair at Federation University Australia and is the foundation director of the Collaborative Research Centre in Australian History (CRCAH). His recent publications include Heritage and Memory of War: Responses from Small Islands. He co-convened the highly successful AHA 2016 Conference From Boom to Bust through CRCAH in Ballarat. Sit for a magical cartoon portrait with Irene as she draws you into a wizard, a fairy, a dragon-tamer or some other fairy-tale being. PERFORMERS MAKE YOUR OWN BOOK OF SPELLS (Saturday only) DR DAVID WALDRON is a lecturer in History and Anthropology at Federation University Australia based in CRCAH (Collaborative Research Centre in Australian History) with a research focus on folklore and community identity.  He is the author of Sign of the Witch: Modernity and the Pagan Revival (2008), Shock! The Black Dog of Bungay – a Case Study in Local Folklore (2010) and Snarls from the Tea-Tree: Victoria’s Big Cat Folklore (2013). HAY BALE MAZE The Hay Bale Maze uses 300 bales and is constructed over three hours with the help of students from Wesley along with other locals. Clunes artist, Marion Anderson creates a different design for the maze each year. NATHAN CURNOW Need the cat to start talking? Want to make the sun come out when it’s raining? Drop in to this hands- on workshop where you can make your own beautiful book of spells to keep the magic of Booktown alive long after you’ve departed. DR BEN MOUNTFORD is a David Myers Research Fellow in History at La Trobe University where he is researching the Australian goldfields. His first book, Britain, China, & Colonial Australia  - on the coming together of the British and Chinese Empires in colonial Australia - was published by Oxford University Press in 2016. THE ILLUSTRATED INDEX OF IMAGINED ANIMALS State Library Victoria has a wonderful collection of reference books. We invite the children of Booktown to the Bluestone Church to contribute to our latest discovery, found in the depths of our rare book treasure trove: The Illustrated Index of Imagined Animals. Draw a picture of your magical beast, and help us to learn more about it by adding some details about its species, diet and habitat. All entries will be compiled into an electronic version of the Index, and sent to contributors following the festival An award winning poet, spoken word performer and past editor of Going Down Swinging. He appears at festivals across the country, featuring recently at White Night Ballarat. His books include The Ghost Poetry Project, RADAR and The Apocalypse Awards.
