The route is a mixture of paved rail-trail, small-town sidewalks, dedicated bike lanes on the street and a stretch of road shoulder along the Great River Road. The Great River Trail begins in Savanna and travels south through many small river towns with traditions still steeped in the quintessential culture of the Mississippi River. There are many opportunities for browsing antiques, enjoying sumptuous catfish dinners and viewing the boats and barges. To reach the Savanna trailhead from State Route 84 (Great River Road), take US 50 (Chicago Street) west and turn left on Broderick Drive. The trailhead is on the left. Jackson County Recreation Trail Twogood Park in Preston | Simpson Street & Hwy 64 Now connected with Copper Creek Trail out of Preston, the trail is 6.6 miles in length. This crushed limestone path is great for biking, hiking, and cross country skiing! The scenic trail is located along the Maquoketa River in Jackson County and crosses both Deep Creek and Copper Creek. About half of the trail is located on the abandoned Chicago-Milwaukee Railroad line. Scenic overlooks along the trail provide striking views of the river valley and its limestone bluffs. Enjoy a picnic or relax in one of the 4 picnic shelters along the trail. Learn more about the area’s geological history from signs along the trail. Also bring your fishing pole, with access to the streams and river. eagle point park clinton park Visitor And Newcomer Guide | 2019 49
