Take conservatories, for example. Originally, they were designed not so much for people, but largely to house the kind of plants that would not survive the British climate. The notion of having a touch of the Mediterranean adjoining your house appealed to those lucky enough to enjoy their “Grand Tours”. Naturally, such splendid buildings were only to be found on big houses. Designs reflected the historical period and took little account of issues such as energy saving and difficulty in cleaning: after all, did wealthy Victorians with plenty of servants worry about global warming? Rows of homes with almost identical white boxes tacked on simply will not do! Colour is a big story now, with an ever-increasing choice to suit any taste or style of property. Most of all, the aim is to ensure the conservatory, whether new or refurbished, is an extra – and very versatile – space which can be enjoyed throughout the year; and one that can be marketed as a wise investment that adds considerable value to the property.
