PROUD SPONSOR OF INDUSTRY NEWS INDUSTRYNEWS MASTER AND APPRENTICE: ANDREW WRIGHT WINDOWS USES 80 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE FOR NEXT GENERATION » » AYRSHIRE GLAZING company and Independent Network member Andrew Wright Windows has put 18 fabricators through their Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs), in a year that also sees the company celebrate 80 years of trading. The family-run company is a prominent employer in Irvine and surrounding areas, with almost 100 employees across its whole operation. Each year Andrew Wright supports a growing number of modern apprentices through levels two and three SVQ coursework and exams, where budding window and door fabricators can learn the trade ‘on the job’ alongside their official college assessments. The 18 pupils that were chosen to take part in the scheme this year receive their results in August before deciding how to use their new qualifications in the fenestration industry. Last year two apprentices, Jamie Mullen and William Malcolmson, gained Levels 2 and 3 SVQ qualifications – in Fabrication of Glass and Supporting Systems respectively – and have since put their diplomas to good use as they both now hold permanent positions at Andrew Wright within the production and quality departments. www.inveka.co.uk Liniar and Pyroplex team up on fire door project » » A TESTING PROGRAMME between two market leading companies, working with some of the industry’s most prestigious component providers, has led to the development of a fire resisting solution for Liniar’s range of composite doors. Pyroplex Ltd approached Liniar at the 2016 FIT Show to propose working together on a project to develop a fire door assembly capable of achieving a fire resistance period of 30 minutes. Prospective customers The Fascia Place then approached Liniar to enquire if its range included fire doors, the project began to take shape. Liniar utilised The Fascia Place’s previous knowledge, working together to develop a successful fire door. During the programme, Liniar and Pyroplex worked closely with leadig component providers, in the initial concept design and participated in small scale fire testing. The collective technical expertise from all the various parties involved in the project proved to be invaluable to see the interaction between products when tested for fire resistance, whilst maintaining other essential characteristics, to comply with Building Regulations. Both door set assemblies achieved a significant overrun in terms of fire resistance. The test was continued to failure, exceeding the 30-minute requirement by more than 15 minutes – meaning the doors are well on the way to reaching the 60-minute mark. www.thefasciaplace.co.uk http://www.liniar.co.uk IGU SPECIALIST SEALS THE DEAL WITH PURPLEX » » ONE OF THE UK’S LEADING experts in insulated glass units with almost half of century of experience, has appointed Purplex as their PR and marketing agency.
