Securing
Standards
» » ON 1ST OCTOBER 2018,
an updated version of the PAS 24
standard, which covers enhanced
security doorsets, came into
effect.
PAS 24:2016 is now mandatory
for all new developments or
refurbishment projects that wish
to meet Secured by Design (SBD),
and this includes the requirement
for TS008 letterplates to be
installed on all doorsets.
As a result, Yale has developed
its new Yale Postmaster
Professional letterplate, which is
the most rigorously tested TS008
product on the market and helps
OEMs meet the demand for
compliant doorsets.
Paul Atkinson, Commercial
Director for Yale Door and
Window
Solutions,
explains: “With
new and calculated burglary
methods being reported, it is vital
that we provide products that
help our customers adhere to the
latest standards. Our new TS008
Yale Postmaster Professional
letterplate combines superior
security, a modern design and a
range of unique features, making
it an unrivalled product within
the current letterplate market.
“It has an external austenitic
304 stainless steel letter flap
that opens 180 degrees to help
eliminate excess leverage on pivot
points and a complete peripheral
seal on the external flap to help
form a thermal and
acoustic barrier.
“We’ve ensured that there is
sufficient space between the door
cut out and the outer flange in
order to aid with the fabrication
process. It can be altered to fit a
range of door thicknesses with its
unique telescopic feature and it’s
incredibly easy to fit, with just
four fixings.
“The Yale Postmaster
Professional is available in a range
of finishes including polished,
brushed, satin silver, gold, black
and white, with colour matching
inside
and out
if required,
and its elegant and slim design
makes it suitable even for narrow
hallways. It also has no sharp
corners, reducing the risk of
injury to children and pets when
held open by packages and
newspapers.”
It’s also important to remember
that higher standards do not
always mean higher costs; ensuring
that the doorsets you supply are
fully compliant, ultimately saves
costs in the long-term.

SAFE & SOUND: SECONDARY GLAZING SYSTEMS
» » SELECTAGLAZE SECONDARY
glazing creates a second barrier of protection
from the inside that can prevent the most
determined thief or protect the occupants
from the effects of bomb blast. Securing
the contents of a building is essential; be it
physical high value objects, highly sensitive
data or the people within. If this is the
case, secondary glazing could provide the
solution.
The security window installations at the
Banqueting House, Whitehall were part of
the first phase of works to repair and restore
this stunning Grade I Listed building. Royal
Warrant Holder, Selectaglaze, was approached
by Carden & Godfrey Architects to provide a
fitting bespoke solution that not only offered
protection to the large windows, but was a
discreet and unobtrusive window treatment, to
blend in with the historic Inigo Jones designed
interior.
Installing the units provided an interesting
challenge as half the openings were at upper
gallery level 10m above the main floor. A
careful method of installation was devised

involving a columnar scaffolding design
complete with lifting apparatus to each
opening. In all, 39 units were installed.
Selectaglaze secondary glazing systems
using low emissivity glass can reduce heat
loss by more than half and achieve a U-value
of around 1.9. With sealed unit glazing this
is further reduced, and a figure as low as 0.8
can be achieved. Bespoke manufacture and
high performance seals ensure the tightest
fit, reducing air infiltration and almost
eliminating drafts.
Secondary glazing is also an efficient
method of reducing background noise,
helping create a more relaxed environment.
Sound travels through a primary window by
a vibration of the glass. Adding secondary
glazing forms a cavity, which reduces
resonance and provides a second barrier for
the noise to travel through. A sound level
reduction of 45dB is possible. The results are
achieved using high performance seals and an
air gap between the windows of 100mm or
more.
Established in 1966 and granted a
Royal Warrant in 2004, Selectaglaze is the
UK’s leading secondary glazing specialist.
Selectaglaze will be exhibiting on Stand N82
at the International Security Expo at Olympia
on the 28th and 29th of November.
