TimberWindows and
Doors Fit For Purpose
»»LAWRENCE WALL,
Managing Director of ERW
Joinery, discusses the issues
installers face when it comes to
replacing windows and doors
in a conservation area, and
why ERW’s products are fit for
purpose.
“When it comes to
refurbishing a listed building
or working on properties in
a conservation area, trying
to balance the requirements
of conservation, building
regulations, aesthetics and the
individual home owner is a
tough call for any installer.
“Throughout our thirtyseven-year history, ERW has
tackled these issues at every
turn, and although we have
developed refurbishment
techniques to restore decaying
timber windows and doors
to their former glory and
protect original glazing, we
have also learnt to recognise
when replacement is the best
course of action. And unlike
most door and window
replacements, those going into
heritage properties are not
straightforward but thanks
to our experience, we have
designed and invested in
products that are fit for this
role.
TIMBER PRODUCTS
Working with key suppliers,
our range of timber windows
and doors are perfect for the
heritage market. Alongside this,
we have invested heavily in our
manufacturing plant to allow
us to use modern techniques to
produce traditional products.
Our computerised production
equipment can recreate any
finished profile in one pass. We
work in engineered timbers to
ensure strength and stability with
minimal waste and precision
joints that fit every time.
Glued and pinned, externally
these joints have traditional
appearance but superior stability
and strength.
Our doors are subject to
the same level of precision
engineering – the door leaf,
panels and frames are designed
and manufactured separately,
but our advanced computerised
line means they fit together
every time. For added thermal
efficiency, the engineered door
panels have a hardwood outer
but inside a combination of
laminated veneer and board
around an insulated core.
Before any product is
assembled it is dipped and
turned in a water-based
preservative and dried naturally
before being painted in our
state-of-the-art spray line. This
ensures complete coverage and
a totally sealed but breathable
timber product that won’t
need repainting for 5 years,
with a 30-year guarantee. All
of this means we are able to
offer a quick turnaround on
production and a finished
product delivered to site ready
to be fitted with minimal
hassle.
