ALUMINIUM
Aluminium set to conquer new build sector
‘Aluminium must next conquer the new build sector if it is to dramatically
increase its market share and continue its renaissance in the domestic sector.’
»»This is the view of Mike Davis,
who is Operations Director at CDW Systems
- one of the UK’s leading specialist aluminium
fabricators.
His comments follow the growing popularity
of aluminium windows and doors in the
residential sector in the UK.
The latest Palmer Market Report, which is
a yearly look at the domestic glazing market,
revealed an increase in aluminium from 5% to
8% in the last couple of years.
Aluminium holds a string of benefits - the
material is naturally strong and the slimmer
frames provide improved sightlines and allow
more light to flood into a property.
As a result aluminium is experiencing a
revival in the replacement domestic market.
But, Mike believes that for aluminium to kick
on further and take significant market share,
it will need to gain traction in the mass newbuild market.
He comments: “The next step for aluminium
is to develop a cost-effective window system
which can price compete with PVCu and offer
the same, if not better, levels of performance
and have mass appeal in the new-build sector.
“We all know that we need to build more
houses in the UK and there is no reason why
aluminium windows and doors can’t be part of
future developments.”
‘part of future developments’
He comments: “There is a need for
constant development and promotion of highperformance products to ensure aluminium
remains in demand. We encourage everyone in
the industry to look towards the next big thing
in aluminium, and have put in place our own
initiatives to raise awareness.”

locks to better protect against the
risk of lock-snapping.
Through the ‘Knowledge Store’
section of its risk management
website, Aviva provides a range of
factsheets on security, and other
property protection matters, all
designed to help customers better
understand their exposure to risk
and how they may best protect
themselves.
Avocet’s managing director,
Clive Lloyd said: “This is a very
welcome and timely addition
to Aviva’s Knowledge Store and
is a significant step in raising
awareness of the risk of locksnapping and the UK Standards
developed to protect against it.”
“The first indication of a change
in insurers’ general awareness
of the issue occurred earlier this
year when the RISCAuthority
incorporated an explanation of
lock-snapping, and the importance
of TS007 and SS312 in the fight
against it, in its publication S24:
Physical Security for Homes –
Guidance to Occupiers.”
Since then, Avocet has seen its

with Neighbourhood and Home

prevention.
“Our aim is simple,” concluded
Clive. “We want to put an end to
lock-snapping.”
“Yes it’s a major issue, but
it’s one for which there is a
readily available solution, and
with the help of organisations
like the RISCAuthority and
Neighbourhood and Home
Watch Network we can make sure
nobody is left in the dark when it
comes to properly securing their
homes.”
