New CE requirements for fire
doors – are you compliant?
John Warburton, recently appointed to the role of Sector Manager for Windows
and Doors Certification at BRE Global takes a brief look at the new requirements
for CE marking for fire door sets which are soon to becomes mandatory.
Anyone who manufactures or
installations fire door sets will be
affected by the publication of EN
16034, the harmonised European
standard that will be made
mandatory in the coming months.
Since July 2013, all door
sets must be CE marked with
manufacturers publishing a
declaration of performance (DOP)
under the hEN 14351 standard.
This covers over 20 characteristics,
but manufacturers need only
declare values for those required
for the country in which they are
to be installed.
Door sets manufactured and
installed in the UK, only have a
few of the characteristics that are
essential; thermal performance,
dangerous substances, safety
devices and ability to release in the
case of emergency exit devices.
As soon as there is a legal
requirement to CE mark fire door
sets to EN 16034 which covers
fire resistance and smoke control
characteristics, manufacturers
will be required by regulation
(Construction Products Regulation
(CPR)) to CE mark their
products.

The main function of fire doors
in the passive fire protection
of buildings is to maintain fire
separation. In addition, it is
recommended that fire doors
and shutters are installed and
maintained by third party approved
competent contractors.
LPS 1056 is the BRE
Certification Scheme for the Test
and Evaluation Requirements for
LPCB Approval and Listing of Fire
Doorsets, Lift Landing Doors and
Shutters. LPS 1056 looks at the
fire integrity of the product and
its door/shutter furniture and calls
up cyclic testing and impact testing
and deals in detail with assessment
procedures for outsized doors/
shutters that cannot be fire
tested.
As with all LPCB approved
fire safety and security products,
they are listed in the Red Book
and available online at www.

is also available free iTunes and

security products and services and
is widely used across the world.
