CONSERVATORIES& SOLIDROOFS RAISING A GLASS TO INSTALLATIONS OF THE YEAR » » HONOURING THE VERY BEST IN glazed roof design and installation, the Atlas Installation of the Year Awards have become an industry highlight. And, as Atlas announces the winners of this year’s contest, sales director Gareth Thomas says the entries this year have been in a league of their own. “Our installers have raised the bar once again with some truly outstanding installations,” says Gareth. “It’s brilliant to see them flexing their design and installation skills that have taken homes from the ordinary to the extraordinary. For me, this contest is all about inspiring other installers and what we’ve seen this year shows everyone just what can be achieved with the right products and a bit of clever thinking.” Taking first place in the awards was Bridgend- based Ewenny Home Improvements for its showstopping Atlas lantern installation on a new build property in Porthcawl. The judges were blown away by the sheer size and scale of the project which combined a sleek 6x3 metre Atlas lantern with bi-folding doors to transform a once unused part of the garden into sun-filled interior that has become the hub of the home. Director Andrew Edwards says: “We were tasked with making a light, bright kitchen diner on this property and the Atlas lantern helped us do exactly that. The end result is just what the client wanted and it looks absolutely stunning. I’d like to thank Atlas and the judging panel for giving us this award – we are so proud to take the winning trophy. Second place went to Glasshouse Ltd who impressed the judges with the exceptional design talent they showed when overhauling a property in one of Cardiff’s most desirable suburbs. Glasshouse took the architect’s proposed design for a pitched roof above a kitchen/diner extension and made it incredible by installing a row of three Atlas Flat Rooflights to make a dramatic focal point. Shaun Armstrong, owner of Glasshouse Ltd, says: “Architects and homeowners love the Atlas Flat Rooflight and this installation shows exactly why. The original design for this extension incorporated a mono pitched lean- to style roof but we knew we could enhance the look further and therefore switched to First place Ewenny Second place Glasshouse Third place Mendip Innovation Award winner Ewenny the Atlas Flat Rooflights. We are very proud indeed to win an award for this project, it’s a real feather in our cap and it’s inspired us to go even bigger next time.” In third place was Mendip Conservatories who wowed judges with their biggest ever project – an impressive 15 metre wide extension on a detached bungalow in Bristol. Briefed to create a contemporary extension for the property, Mendip came up with an ingenious design that seamlessly merged a huge Atlas Skyroom with a tiled roof extension. The project threw up some tricky technical challenges and the Atlas team worked closely with Mendip to develop a number of custom- built solutions to overcome them. On winning the award, Kim Eyres, owner of Mendip Conservatories, said: “The design for this project was good, but it was also a challenge, and the guys did a superb job on the installation. What made it possible though was the technical expertise that Atlas gave us and the quality of the Atlas products. This helped us create an astonishing installation and the rear of the property is totally unrecognisable from before. The customer is thrilled, so much so in fact, that they recommended us to their daughter.” The judging panel also announced that this year’s winner of the special Innovation Award was Ewenny Home Improvements for their ultra-modern glazed extension on a Cardiff property. Describing the one-off project as “like nothing we’ve seen before” the judges were bowled over by the 13.5 metre long Atlas lean-to roof, which bathes the space below with light. Andrew Edwards of Ewenny said: “This wasn’t a run of the mill installation and as soon as I saw it, I knew the result would be amazing. We’ve worked with this architect previously and he’s as much a believer in the Atlas roof as we are, which is why he specified it for this project.” www.atlasroofsolutions.co.uk C L E A RV I E W-U K .
