‘WORLD-LEADING’ PROJECT WINS AT G18
» » PILKINGTON UNITED
Kingdom Limited, part of
the NSG Group, has won
‘Commercial Project of the Year’
at the prestigious G18 Awards
for its installation at 6 St Andrew
Square, Edinburgh; a £90 million
scheme in central Edinburgh; that
integrates five existing buildings
into a contemporary mixed-use
development that’s almost fully
glass-fronted.
Judges singled the development
out for being ‘a well-executed
project helped by the expertise
of the specialist contractors and
glass supplier’; adding that the
project sends ‘a strong message
that UK products can still lead
the world’.
All glass installed was
manufactured by Pilkington in
the UK. The scheme’s ground
floor retail units and the soffit
glazing on the underside of the
projecting spaces were achieved
using a Pilkington Planar™
structural bolted system.
Pilkington Suncool™ 66/33
T glass was specified across
the whole building. This solar
control and low-emissivity glass
reduces transmission of heat
from the sun to just 33 per
cent, while allowing 66 per cent
of visible light through. This
ensures a comfortable climate for
occupants all-year-round without
compromising on bright interiors
and spectacular views. 3000 sq m
of Pilkington Insulight™ double
glazed units were also supplied to
the project.

The highest standards for a landmark project
» » GLASS PROCESSING SPECIALIST,
TuffX, has successfully supplied 235 panels of
precision made, 10mm clear toughened glass
for use as internal balustrades on a prestigious
Barratt London on Lower Thames Street
London’s world-famous Tower Bridge.
With a development that demanded
premium components throughout, it was
crucial that the company supplying the large
number of glass balustrades – a key feature
of the project – was capable of meeting the
highest standards, not just in terms of quality
and consistency, but also customer service.
TuffX managing director, Graham Price,
commented: “All the panels were ordered in
a variety of shapes and sizes, which for some
suppliers could have caused problems and
therefore delays. However, through consistent
investment in our factory, we work with the
latest processing equipment, including three
CNC machines and an advanced Glaston
FC500 glass toughener, giving us complete
control over our entire manufacturing
process.”
With nearly 20 years’ experience in
manufacturing and supplying specialist
toughened safety glass, TuffX regards itself
as one of the UK’s most forward thinking
and customer focussed companies. As part
of a comprehensive portfolio of products,
it has produced balustrading, infill panels
and glass cladding for numerous prestigious
developments.

glass – for today tomorrow and beyond – to a
world in which glass will play an even greater
role in our lives.
The endless possibilities of glass were
encapsulated in the design of the Guardian Glass
stand, where concentric rings helped architects
and cladders visualise what is possible with glass
today, and how Guardian Glass can help realise
their visions, as well as how future challenges that
humans will face could be overcome.
Starting from the outside of the stand,
Guardian Glass products are presented as
interactive displays, including Guardian
Clarity™ anti-reflective glass and Guardian
SunGuard® coated solar control glass for
windows and building façades. These products
push the boundaries of what is possible in
structural glass, providing the optimum
balance between how the glass performs and
how it looks.
Venturing deeper into the stand, visitors
discover some of Guardian’s ground-breaking
products of tomorrow, including its new
dynamic shading solution which, unlike any
other shading product currently available, is a
reliable and cost-effective integrated shade for
windows and doors at the push of a button or
via an app.
