BUSINESSNEWS A Creative Mix Exploring Offsite in the Education Sector The government has recently confirmed that an investment of circa £2 billion is to be allocated to rebuild or refurbish 277 schools across England. »»The programme presents the opportunity for offsite construction to play a major role in the coming years to help to provide a fast, adaptable and sustainable method of building in the education sector to meet the challenging targets. The Governments Priority School Building Programme (PBSP) comes after a warning from the Local Government Association that the country is approaching a “tipping point” in the shortage of school places for children. One of the most frequently cited benefits of offsite construction is the speed of construction that it offers. Dramatic improvements over conventional techniques of construction are documented, with the time required to construct and commission an offsite building being typically reduced by 50% - 60% in cases where large elements can be prefabricated. 92 » A PR 2015 » CL EARVI E W- UK . C O M Due to rising costs in construction there is the danger that financial pressures might cause some firms to turn down the work. In terms of overall programme costs, the government has put a “more for less” strategy in place. This involves a substantial degree of standardisation across schools, particularly in reference to architecture and layout, thereby providing attributes that are well suited to offsite construction solutions. Explore Offsite is a series of informative events focused around the offsite construction sector and the range of technologies on offer.
