INSTALLERSUPPORT Apprenticeships - the way forward? Whilst the UK’s work force is aging, there is potential to lose the invaluable skills and knowledge gained. Apprenticeships are an excellent effective training tool, which will allow the transfer of these skills, knowledge and expertise. It is imperative that businesses retain the core skills and transfer these to new recruits and help maintain business continuity, competiveness with the industry and overall remain profitable. Apprenticeships are designed to create a modern work force that combines academic studies with real on the job experience gained over a period of time. The Apprentice Incentive bonus is an employer incentive designed to ensure that the British Economy has the skilled workers it needs. This will significantly boost the incentive to employers who take on apprentices in the glass and glazing and construction trades to assist companies in having the right qualified staff. The incentive bonus is £1500.00 for each apprentice employed by the company up to a maximum of ten in one year. The program lasts for a minimum twelve months and one day, to include NVQ, Technical certificate, functional skills maths and English. Personal Learning and Thinking Skills provide candidates with the skills and qualities required for success in learning and life. There are six categories that contribute to this skill set. As a business tool, these groups are drivers behind success and failure. Apprenticeships are now being recognised as the way forward in training young people who will become our next generation workforce. According to the national apprenticeship service (NAS) there will be 20,000 apprenticeships available to young workers in the UK this year. There are currently in the region of a million young people without work or training in the UK.
