Out & About
There is also a fabulous restaurant called the National Dining Rooms, a
rare treat of British cuisine, plus the more relaxed National Café for light
lunches, coffees and cakes… And the best thing of all about the National
Gallery; its free.
Next door is the National Portrait Gallery, the portraits depict characters
from the Early Tudors through to contemporary characters, such as famous
musicians. If you find your portrait in here you know you have ‘made it’!
Across the square is St Martin-in-the-Fields, which describes itself as a
vibrant, open and inclusive church at the heart of London. They hold free
lunch time concerts 2 or 3 times a week at 1pm so this an ideal place to
come, take a moment and grab a bite to eat; their award winning Café in
the Crypt provides affordable, freshly prepared food.
If your preference is at the more contemporary end of the scale then the
Institute of Contemporary Arts is probably the place for you. Established
in 1947 as a modern arts centre, it contains two galleries, a theatre,
bookshop and a bar and café; they pride themselves on challenging the
foundations of contemporary art.
The London Transport Museum seeks to conserve and explain the transport
heritage of our Capital. The Victorian iron and glass building, which was
originally part of the Covent Garden fruit, veg and flower market, displays
many disused buses, trams and trolleybuses as well as many artefacts.
