You are sandwiched between Covent Garden to the East and Covent Garden to the West. Leicester Square is one of London’s major attractions and is widely regarded as the capital’s entertainment hub. It is London’s ‘cinema land’ making it the prime location in London for the world’s leading film premieres. If Leicester Square is cinema land then Covent Garden is Theatre land. With its dramatic central square and surrounding Italianate style architecture, there is a very European feel about the area creating an ideal environment for al fresco drinking and dining all the while watching the world go by. Covent Garden takes ‘people watching’ to another level as here the theatre takes to the streets with the areas famous street performers who line James Street and the area around the covered market. Here you can enjoy fine dining, varied shopping and high-class entertainment – the area’s historic association with retail and entertainment economy continues. A little further South of West Street is Trafalgar Square, with its statues, fountains and grandiose architecture this is iconic London at its best and offers a more traditional form of ‘culture’. The square is crowned by London’s National Gallery and its name commemorates the battle of Trafalgar and the British naval victory over Napoleon. At its centre is Nelson’s Column guarded by four lion statues. In each corner of the square is a plinth for sculpture and statues; Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth, in the Northwest corner, has become renowned in its own right; since 1998 it has been used to show a series of specially commissioned artworks. Trafalgar Square is a public space and is famed for political demonstrations, marches and community gatherings that have taken place over the years.
