Out & About
Charing Cross is one of those areas it is fun to simply wander around and
get a feel for. Some parts of the area don’t look particularly ‘grand’ but time
spent getting to know it will be time well spent.
For ‘culture vultures’ the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery offer
hours of interest, and all free. The Courtauld Gallery is small but perfect, a
gem. It is within Somerset House, an important arts and cultural centre. In
winter the courtyard is turned into an ice skating rink!
A stroll through Trafalgar Square and down The Mall will take you to
Buckingham Palace and perhaps the Changing of the Guard ceremony colourful pageantry which the Brits do so well! The Queen’s Gallery and The
Royal Mews, both at Buckingham Palace, are open to the public. Horse
Guards Parade is in Whitehall, and further along is Downing Street, the
official home of the Prime Minister.
Covent Garden is pure entertainment! It’s filled with street entertainers, street
cafes from which to watch the world go by, some elegant architecture, lots

of interest. Here also is the Royal Opera House, home to The Royal Opera
and The Royal Ballet.
For those of you who love to jog, St James’s Park offers the perfect
opportunity. The oldest of London’s eight Royal Parks, nearly 60 acres of
good paths, grass and trees await you.
