With its central location you have the luxury of choice here, perhaps too
much choice! And if your idea of entertainment is stage or screen orientated
then you are in the right place. Cinemas and theatres are two a penny
and you can see some of the most celebrated plays, musicals, shows and
films here, including blockbuster premiers. On your doorstep is the Adelphi
Theatre, home to hugely popular productions such as the Bodyguard!
Covent Garden itself offers a plethora of things to do and see. Just step
outside and enjoy some extraordinary and talented street performers!
Facing onto the central square is the stunning Royal Opera House, which
has been the permanent home to The Royal Opera since 1945 and The
Royal Ballet since 1946. With the ability to seat over 2,000 people
the venue boasts the biggest names in opera and ballet and has been
presenting both art forms here since the 1730’s. Recently refurbished it has
made a move to more democratic ticket prices and boasts alluring travelling
ballet companies and big opera names.
The area is intrinsically linked with the performing arts and there is a wealth
of theatres in the area, particularly along The Strand, this is not called
‘Theatreland’ for nothing.
Also on The Strand is the Courtauld Gallery, set in breath-taking Somerset
House, it contains a collection of paintings ranging from early Renaissance
through to the 20th Century and includes Manet’s famous work, ‘A Bar at
the Folies-Bergere’.
If all this is too animated for your tastes, then head to The National Gallery.
Majestically looming over Trafalgar Square and quite stunning from the
outside this world famous collection of over 2000 paintings has been built
up for the nation over the last 200 years. It focuses specifically on western
European painting from the 13c to the 19c boasting many fine examples
from the grand masters such as Da Vinci, Turner, Rembrandt, Rubens,
Titian and Caravaggio.
