Although in some areas drought-related water restrictions
are lifted, irrigation runoff is still prohibited and considered
illicit by the State, County, City and water districts.
Irrigation runoff is defined as the discharge of irrigation
water to the storm drain system. The storm drain system
includes gutters, streets, storm drains, and culverts.
Irrigation water from your yard drain is also prohibited
from entering the storm drain system.
Excessive irrigation is often the most significant contributor
to storm water pollution from home and garden care
activities. Pollutants get dissolved in irrigation water and
carried to the storm drain system. Additionally, particles
and materials coated with fertilizers and pesticides get
suspended in the irrigation flow and carried.
Unlike the sewer, water in the storm drain system is
directly discharged to creeks, and eventually the ocean,
untreated. Water runoff from overwatering landscaping is
considered an illicit discharge and is illegal.
Runoff from over-irrigation or, even worse, from hosing off
outside areas, not only consumes large quantities of water,
but also transports pollutants, sediments, and wastes.
Irrigation systems must be properly adjusted to reflect
seasonal water needs, and not cause runoff to the street
gutters and storm drain system. Do not hose off outside
surfaces and hardscapes to clean. Fix any leaking faucets,
especially outdoor faucets, and eliminate unnecessary
water sources.
