Mission Statement

A Message From Parks & Recreation

“ Word of the Month ” Art Contest
Laguna Niguel artists are invited to participate in a “ Word of the Month ” Art Contest to showcase their artistic talents . This contest is open to Laguna Niguel residents and students of schools serving Laguna Niguel including Dana Hills and Aliso Niguel High Schools and Aliso Viejo Middle School . This free art contest is a new initiative that encourages artists to develop a visual piece inspired by the “ Word of the Month .” One winner in each category will be recognized and presented with a certificate from the Mayor and City Council .
Age & Residency Requirements
• Must be six years of age or older
• Must be a Laguna Niguel resident , attend a school in Laguna Niguel , or attend a school that serves the residents of Laguna Niguel . Eligible schools outside City borders include Aliso Niguel High School , Aliso Viejo Middle School , and Dana Hills High School .
Contestants will be Grouped into Four Categories
• Primary : Grades 1 - 5
• Secondary : Grades 6 - 12
• Adult : Ages 18 - 55
• Classic : Ages 55 +
Bring your artwork and completed entry form to the Laguna Niguel City Hall receptionist by the respective deadline . Residents can submit more than one piece of artwork . All artwork will be displayed for two weeks with a one-week judging period . Owners must pick up their artwork on the following Monday .
The general public will judge all artwork submissions through a paper ballot process . All art pieces will be publicly displayed in the City Hall lobby . Winners will be notified the day before the second City Council Meeting of each month .
All artwork must be family friendly content . Details on format and sizes of artwork , requirements , and the contest entry form are available on the City ’ s website at www . CityofLagunaNiguel . org .

Colleen Gelfer
Recreation Supervisor - Special Events
Colleen was one of those kids that would “ hang out ” and volunteer at the park , handing out balls and helping with crafts . It was her love of sports and the outdoors that brought her to the field of recreation , and she has worked as a recreation professional for over 20 years . In her current position as Special Events Supervisor , she plans , organizes , and facilitates many of the City ’ s Special Events from Bunny Bonanza and the Summer Concerts to the Christmas Tree Lighting and annual Holiday Parade . She is also a liaison to the Holiday Parade Committee and is grateful for the opportunity to work together with a dedicated group of community volunteers who help bring the parade to life . She desires to have all who come to the special events and activities , to have enjoyable and memorable experiences .
Colleen and her family feel very fortunate to be able to be a part of this awesome community , and she feels very blessed to work in such a fantastic city that truly believes that Parks Make Life Better !
Jeffrey Kirby
Recreation Supervisor – Skate Park
Jeffrey Kirby started his career with the City of Laguna Niguel back in 2008 at the Crown Valley Pool . He is now a Recreation Supervisor for the City overseeing the Laguna Niguel Skate Park , volunteers for the annual Haunted Trails event and is helping coordinate the City ’ s first annual Senior Games . Before working for the City of Laguna Niguel Jeffrey graduated from California State University , Long Beach with a degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies while working for the City of Anaheim Community Services Department .
Jeffrey resides and works in the City of Laguna Niguel . “ As a resident and employee , I get to see where my tax dollars go and make sure these dollars go to enhance our community .” “ One of the most rewarding parts of the job is being able to plan , coordinate , and execute a wide range of diverse activities that allow our residents to enjoy this wonderful city ,” said Jeff . The Laguna Niguel Skate Park (@ lnsk8park ) allows him to manage a park that directly and positively impacts our younger community . Throughout the year the Skate Park puts on several activities to bring our skate community together and enjoy one of the City of Laguna Niguel ’ s unique parks .
Jeffrey enjoys spending time with his wife and family using many of our city ’ s amenities such as our hiking trails , aquatic facility , and our parks .
Brett Woodhull
Recreation Supervisor - Sports / Athletic Facilities
Brett has worked as a recreation professional for almost 15 years . He started out as a Recreation Leader at the Laguna Niguel Skate Park and worked his way up to being the supervisor of the facility for over 10 years . In May of 2017 , Brett transferred from the Skate Park to become the Recreation Supervisor for the City of Laguna Niguel Athletic Facilities . Brett ’ s responsibilities include the scheduling and allocating of all City of Laguna Niguel Athletic Facilities to local youth and adult sports organizations as well as travel and club teams . He also works to facilitate the maintenance of all sports fields . Brett is also the staff liaison to the City of Laguna Niguel Sports Advisory Committee and enjoys working with local sports organizations to ensure that the residents of Laguna Niguel have the best possible facilities for their enjoyment . “ Growing up , I remember how excited I would get when we got to play baseball at night , under the lights , on a beautifully maintained field . You felt like a professional . I ’ m proud to be able to provide great facilities for our residents to play sports on .”
Brett lives in Rancho Santa Margarita with his 7-year-old daughter Makena . They enjoy going on hikes , going to Anaheim Ducks games , and taking trips to their favorite destinations including Big Bear , Palm Springs , and Hawaii . Brett is also an avid mountain biker and has spent several hours riding the local trails in the hills surrounding Laguna Niguel .
