Citizen of the Year
At the City’s Annual Volunteer
Appreciation Dinner on May 20, 2017,
long-time resident and community
volunteer David Tuma was named
the 2016 Citizen of the Year. For
many years, David has dedicated time and effort to
support various community programs and events.
David’s volunteerism includes coaching the YMCA Itty Bitty
Sports Programs which encourages young players to learn
sports fundamentals including good sportsmanship and
teamwork. David was a PTA and Booster Club Member at
Crown Valley Elementary and Niguel Hills Middle School.
He chaperoned school dances, field trips, served as a
Historian and participated in fundraising efforts for school
clubs. David also assisted the Boys Scouts Troop 743 with
merit badges and camp-out activities.
David is part of the Laguna Niguel Disaster Preparedness
Team, and for five years Da vid was a member of the Police
Auxiliary Citizen Team. David volunteered with the You
Are Not Alone (YANA) Program which offers a measure of
safety for people who live alone. He volunteers in numerous
Laguna Niguel Parks and Recreation events including the
Haunted Trails event, Summer Concert Series and serves
on the Laguna Niguel Holiday Parade Committee. He also
volunteers his time at the YMCA’s July 4th Run in the Park,
the Laguna Niguel Fire Patrol during Red Flag Warning as
well as the many events sponsored by the Laguna Niguel
Military Support Committee. For the last five years, David
served as a Committee member for the local Relay for Life
event and participated in fundraising for the American
Cancer Society. David is an active member of St. Timothy’s
Catholic Church. He is also a member of the Knights of
Columbus a Catholic fraternal service organization.
David’s outstanding, dedicated service to the community
is indeed worthy of recognition and very deserving of the
2016 Citizen of the Year Award. Congratulations David
and thank you for all that you do!
The Citizen of the Year award began as a joint project of
Laguna Niguel Service organizations to recognize a citizen
who has demonstrated outstanding voluntary service. A
committee of former Citizen of the Year recipients convenes
annually to select the winner. Nominations are usually
accepted during the month of April. If you would like to
nominate someone for the 2017 Citizen of the Year Award,
details will be available on the City’s website in early 2018.
Laguna Niguel Military
Support Committee (LNMSC)
The City’s adopted military units—the 1st Battalion, 4th
Marine Regiment; the Navy guided missile destroyer
USS Stockdale; and our newly adopted 1st Battalion,
140th Aviation Regiment of the U.S. Army National
Guard, are constantly on the move to keep our nation
safe. This summer, the 1/4 Marines will be returning home
from an overseas deployment. The LNMSC conducted
a “Welcome Home” Care Package Drive on April 8th
at the City’s Albertsons stores to support and provide
returning Marines with various toiletries. The LNMSC
also conducted a “Support Our Sailors” Car Wash on
May 6th to benefit the sailors and families of the USS
Stockdale DDG-106. Check the LNMSC website www.
lnmilitarysupport.org for upcoming events and for updates
on the comings and goings of our units.
Laguna Niguel
One of the ways the LNMSC supports our adopted
military families is by providing baby care packages
for expectant mothers, loaded with all sorts of baby
supplies. In April, the LNMSC held a successful drive
at the City’s Walmart store, collecting new items and
cash to prepare the baby packages. A warm thank you
to all of our residents, volunteers, and donors for their
generous contributions.
