Teaming Up with Schools Made City Hall Field Trip Possible A group of local fifth-grade students were immersed for a day in the work of their local government as part of a special field trip on Oct. 23, 2018 to commemorate Florida City Government Week. Cities across Florida celebrated City Government Week from Oct. 22 to 29. These students definitely weren’t sitting behind a desk all day. They experienced the many aspects of government up close – from watching the City’s Swamp Meister in action, to seeing the Police Department’s K-9s at work, to learning about how recycling can benefit their own neighborhoods. Port St. Lucie officials planned and organized the educational field trip with the help of St. Lucie Public Schools, along with homeschool co-ops, and charter and private schools in the City. In Port St. Lucie, the fifth graders toured parts of City Hall, met City Council members and worked on hands-on projects with various City departments. The students also participated in mock Council meetings with Mayor Gregory J. Oravec and Councilwoman Stephanie Morgan, who posed an issue to the group, in which the students debated and voted on a solution. The City plans to make this field trip, which was planned and organized by the Communications Department with support from many departments, an annual event during City Government Week.
