All the world’s a stage
I
’ll be presenting the Award for Best Meeting or Conference
at the upcoming Australian Event Awards being held on the
Sunshine Coast in September. I’ll be honest and say as much as I
love supporting the award and giving it to the worthy winner, I hate
being on stage. It’s not where I want to be, and much prefer being
in the audience with a glass of bubbles in my hand. But it does
make me realise that anyone on that stage is part of the show, and
needs to be prepared.
Our story on page 18 looks at just that, and just how important it is
for events to make sure their speakers are not only the right fit for
the theme, but are also able to really communicate their message
in an engaging and authentic way. Delegates don’t want to be
lectured at, they want to be inspired, and that means everyone from speakers through to
MCs need to be on their A game.
Unfortunately I also realise that I need to prepare as well. And that goes for anyone who
steps onto a stage at an event. As audience members I’m sure we have all been at an
event that was really grabbing our attention until someone comes on who is perhaps not
a professional speaker but is nonetheless required to deliver a speech and the whole thing
falls flat. I think it’s time we understood that everyone from keynote speakers through to
the person who may just be doing the welcome needs to make sure they are all part of the
show. And that, as the saying goes, they leave their delegates wanting more.
