His name is James Dattolo, AKA DJ Pet. He has been running a monthly event in the industrial scene in Manchester NH for a long time, and has recently started a new monthly event in Manchester in the dance music scene. I had a chat with him about his scene, his style as a DJ, and what’s going on with his now two successful monthly events in NH. Justin: You're a very music-scene oriented DJ. Tell us what got you into the music scene, and into DJing. Pet: I've always been into music from an early age. While I have been on and off again with playing musical instruments, I've always kept up with produced music. As so many other DJs will say, I started off with playing house parties, other's as well as my own. Once I controlled the party theme as well as the music I saw the effects of proper track selection. Justin: I've personally heard you spin a ton of different genres of dance music, so I know you have an eclectic taste in terms of song selection, but how would you describe the style in which you mix them, as compared to other DJs? Pet: Spinning in a Goth club is more about song selection and keeping a mood rather than a focus on beat matching and drops. Industrial today is heavily influenced by the more beat oriented dance music of the various house sub genres so I can do more beat matching as well as overlaying tracks and bass swapping or just bringing vocals in and out. I personally like mixing tracks with vocals since the Goth/Industrial scene is so full of tracks that have them so I got the practice in early. Ro Justin: Speaking of the industrial scene, I know you with STEGGA aka Justin Looper run one of the older Industrial nights in the area, called Resurrection, but you've recently started another event in Manchester N.H. that's showcasing more of the "EDM" side, can you tell us about that event? Pet: Sure thing! Resurrection has been going on almost 8 years now and if there is one thing that I have seen in the industrial pepper to add scene is that it appropriates a ton of music interest since I would go crazy if I had to spin it for 2 solid hours! from other genres. Benny Benassi's "Satisfaction" is one example. When Lady Justin: How can people find out more about Impulse, if they'd like Gaga's "Fame Monster" CD hit every to check it out? Goth/Industrial night was slammed with Pet: You can find out more on requests to play something off of it. As a our Facebook page. Also, my club DJ my job is to keep people happy production company A Curious and keep with the times but I was seeing Production is hard at work more and more requests for non-gothic producing a new monthly event tracks that 50% loved and the 50% hated would constantly complain about the state called Phantasm. It's a fetish of Goth clubs playing pop music. I created night with a difference. We are doing this with no door fee and Impulse to bridge that gap. I dropped the we are accepting donations for a dress code and started bringing in other different charity each month. DJs from outside of the goth/industrial scene and it's been going for over a year now. I recently moved it over to the last Sat of the month and really increased the number of people attending. Justin: So what kind of acts have you been bringing into Impulse? What styles of dance music have you been showcasing? What do you spin when you play at Impulse? Pet: It goes through cycles. My crowd loves themes until they don't. Video game theme nights have always went over well. This Sat (tomorrow) we are having Chaos D back who is a crowd favorite at Impulse. Andy brings in a solid base of hardcore that keeps the floor hopping all night. I'm planning on spinning an Industrial Rave set To find out more hit up (which is like Hardstyle with a lot more www.getdjpet.com or lyrics) to show contrast. I tend to spin more facebook.com/getdjpet ElectroWubStep with some industrial tossed in; I use dub step more like salt and
