Dear Cider Mag Readers,
This issue is dedicated to the memory of Demse Zullo (The Alchemystics), a very talented drummer and personal friend who was killed
tragically in a car accident in early May. I met Demse many years ago
when his group first played at Harlow’s Pub where I was working at
the time. I immediately fell in love with the band, and continued to see
them over the years at festivals and cobill shows with Roots of Creation.
Demse was a solid person. I have fond memories of him philosophising, sharing stories, and shouting “Mama Bear!” to me from across the
field at Ziontific. At Green River Fest in 2012 Demse and his beloved
daughter Ocea sat with me, my parents and sister, and my newborn
baby. He was anxious to talk about parenthood, including childbirth
and nursing, which surprised all of us. Demse’s love for his daughter
was never masked--it shown brighter than any star I’ve ever seen.
In this special issue of Cider Mag you will find many contributions
that celebrate Demse’s memory, including an elegant obituary by Vermont music writer, John Powell, as well as a brief recap from The Alchemystics’ set at Strangecreek Campout, the review of their brand
new album, For the Future, which was released on May 22, and many
beautiful photos that capture only a small amount of Demse’s inner
fire.
Along with his daughter, Demse leaves behind his wife

In addition to remembering the life of our beloved friend, Cider Mag
is celebrating our 50th issue! It’s a big mileston for any publication,
but particularly important for an independent
magazine, funded by our local sponsors and
fueled by the music community, including a
handful of dedicated music fans turned writers. We are very proud of all that we’ve grown
to become, and look hopeful toward the future,
as we continue to grow and better serve our
