Generational Engagement

by Brian Kaylor, Generational Engagement Team Leader

Each year, Beloit College in Wisconsin

publishes a “mindset list” to help explain

the new class of freshmen. The list puts the

world of the students in perspective, which

can particularly help older professors

understand what students may or may not

know from life experiences. Here are a few

of the observations about the students who

just wrapped up their first year of college:

“Among those who have never been alive

in their lifetime are Tupac Shakur, JonBenet

Ramsey, Carl Sagan, and Tiny Tim.”

“During their initial weeks of kindergarten,

they were upset by endlessly repeated

images of planes blasting into the World

Trade Center.”

“The Unabomber has always been behind bars.”

“When they see wire-rimmed glasses, they think Harry Potter, not John Lennon.”

“Courts have always been overturning bans on same-sex marriages.”

“Bosnia and Herzegovina have always been one nation.”

“Hello Dolly...cloning has always been a fact, not science fiction.”

“Female referees have always officiated NBA games.”

"We want to help congregations

understand, build relationships,

and share the gospel with

new generations and cultures."
