Stewardship is about people – those who may be blessed by the sharing of our gifts and about the blessing received by us when we open our hearts, hands, and, sometimes, our wallets to others.

“The Lord Loveth a Cheerful Giver”

How often I heard Rufus Cushman say these words. I am only just beginning to understand what they mean. I think he meant that we should give until it feels good. Not that we should make a sacrifice that short-changes our family, but that we should be so generous that we know, in our hearts, that we are using our resources to support what matters most to us.

One way to accomplish this is to give in proportion to our income. The United Church of Christ encourages proportionate giving—that is, being aware of what percentage of our income we are giving, and striving to increase that percentage each year. Our giving becomes a spiritual practice which brings joy to our hearts as we see our gifts used to further the kingdom of God.

First Church Stewardship for 2018 has begun. Each week, we are hearing from members about what First Church means to them, and how they determine their pledge. Pledge cards will be mailed to you in mid-October. We encourage you to offer your pledge on Consecration Sunday. You may also arrange for online pledging, or you may bring your pledge to the office.

The Leadership Dinner will take place on Tuesday, October 24 in Bailey Hall. This will be an opportunity for lay leaders of our church to hear an inspiring message and help our church prepare for Consecration Sunday. Everyone is invited to take part.

On Consecration Sunday, November 5, we are invited to place our pledges in the offering plate, as a sign or our own consecration to God as we receive communion. We will then recess to Bailey Hall for a delicious brunch, celebrating together the vitality of our church community and our faithfulness to Jesus Christ’s mission on earth. Make your reservations by placing a reservation card in the offering plate or by calling Maura (567-6287).

The Guest Preacher for the Leadership Dinner and Consecration Sunday will be Rev. Todd Weir, Senior Pastor of First Churches in Northampton since 2012. Todd seeks to unite spiritual practice with action for the common good and has worked extensively to promote affordable housing and help for the homeless. We look forward to his unique view of stewardship.
