Support the Carbon Fee

by the Environmental Justice Team

Most of us know that climate change is real but we feel helpless and think what can I do? We try to not use so much plastic and try to curb waste. We insulate our houses, and wish our government would do something. We feel we have little power.

BUT, there is something very important that we can do. We can work through our state to establish a carbon fee on all carbon usage in our state. Both Republican and Democrats economists agree that a carbon bill has is most effective way to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Since our national government is not acting, individual states are beginning to enact such fees. Washington State is almost there. Canada’s British Columbia enacted such a fee several years ago with great economic results as a side effect. And, after review, the Canadian government decided to begin a national policy next year.

There are 2 carbon fee bills present now in the Massachusetts legislature. The trouble is that they are stuck in a larger committee (The Joint Committee on Telecommunications) and will languish there unless brought out. 71 legislators have signed on to bring it out, but 10 more need to be convinced.
