HUNGARY IN THE
XVIth CENTURY
By the early 16th century the Hungarian state was gravely threatened by the
Ottoman Empire. 1526 - the year which is known by everyone in our country.
Why? The Ottomans achieved their first victory over the Hungarian army at
the Battle of Mohács. The country fell into 3 parts – the area of Ottoman
occupation, Transylvania, and the smaller Kingdom of Hungary. For more than
150 years the Ottomans occupied 1/3 of our state and continued their expansion
through numerous battles. We tried to recall these hard decades of our history.
