Directions Home. It is their first
project comprised almost entirely
of cover songs and quite possibly
the most far-reaching album of
their career. With their hearts and
minds squarely oriented around
making great music that they love
and giving new life to songs that
people know and can relate to,
the ladies embarked on one of the
most exciting, creative journeys in
their storied career—a journey
that didn’t include conforming to
any particular genre or chasing
favor with radio.
“We were trying to serve the
song,” Shelley says. “A lot of
times you try to serve radio, but
this time, we wanted to serve the
song and capture the best way to
treat each one. Not feeling like we
had to measure up to someone
else’s standards gave us a lot of
freedom and we were able to
create an album that we love.”
They met those standards with
the help of the extraordinarily
talented musician and producer,
Andy Leftwich. A mandolin and
fiddler player, Andy has been a
part of Ricky Skaggs’ 14-time
GRAMMY award winning group,
Kentucky Thunder. With his wife,
Rachel, taking point on vocal
arrangement, the production of
this album brought to fruition the
girls’ hopes for the songs—to be
delivered in a style that was fresh
and original, but indisputably
them—and achieved the sound
they were aiming for.
“We really envisioned that this
record would feel like you’re
sitting around a group of
amazing musicians doing a
live show,” says Denise.
