Kat Chat
Without a doubt one of the best aspects of my job is
the opportunity to hit the road travelling to regional
areas to meet with retailers whose stories grace
the pages of our magazine.
There is no substitute for personally meeting these
business owners and chatting with them about
their businesses, their customers and their dreams.
A common thread that appears to be shared by
all that I speak with is why they chose to become
involved in the health and wellness industry, and
that thread is Passion.
I travelled 365km north from Brisbane along the Bruce Highway to Bundaberg
where I was welcomed by the retailers who appear in this edition. Bundaberg,
affectionately known as ‘Bundy’ is not just the gateway to the wonders held
within the Great Southern Barrier Reef, it is a region that provides the perfect
blend of country and coastline. Established in 1870 Bundaberg has a population
of around 48,000 and is essentially known as a sugar cane town, although it is
now considered large enough to be a major service centre and is characterised by
its wide streets and tropical parks and gardens.
Somewhat of a Mecca for the Grey Nomads in winter, Bundy is close to balmy
perfection, whilst in summer it quietly swelters under the hot, subtropical sun. It
is of course the perfect climate for sugar cane farming and it is here that the city’s
best export Bundaberg Rum is made at the Bundaberg distillery.
I resisted the urge to sample the locally made brew opting instead to explore the
region in my limited free time. I didn’t need to travel far to find some postcard
worthy locations. Baldwin Swamp is 4km from the Bundaberg Post Office and
is known as Bundaberg’s own “Kakadu, it is home to magnificent walking trails
through the wetlands, and inhabited by thousands of waterbirds.
A short drive past the fields of sugar cane saw me arrive at Bargara Beach known
for its black basalt beaches and the loggerhead turtles who come to lay their
eggs at Mon Repos.
Perhaps one of Bundy’s best kept secrets is the Basin Rock pool which is situated
at Kelly’s Beach in Bargara. This man made rock pool is perfect for snorkelling
and discovering marine life in a semi protected ocean filled swimming pool.
Whilst my time in Bundy was all too brief I did leave there with a new
appreciation for the region. Bundaberg is not a town that you just pass through
on your way to somewhere better, Bundy is its own destination.
