Complete Health Magazine Kat Chat Steve and I believe that inside every challenge is a beautiful gift waiting to be unwrapped. However, sometimes it takes the passage of time to fully appreciate what the gift actually is. What I am about to share with you exemplifies this. In my Spring 2016 Kat Chat I told the story of how Steve discovered he had Bowel Cancer after he had taken the Government funded Bowel Cancer test. Whilst he did have to undergo surgery and the removal of 28cm of his bowel, the early detection helped him avoid having Chemotherapy and Radiation therapy. For quite some time Steve struggled to understand where and what the gift was, but in November 2018 it became clear. A routine PET scan ordered by his Oncologist happily confirmed that he was Cancer free, but it revealed that he had a serious heart problem that required urgent attention. The scan detected a dangerously large Aorta and a blocked artery. A subsequent visit to a Heart Surgeon had him quickly booked into hospital for further tests. The results were not good! Unbeknownst to Steve the results also indicated that he had suffered a heart attack some months before, which was mistakenly diagnosed as Pneumonia. Steve had to undergo open heart surgery to unblock the artery and reduce the size of his Aorta which was at risk of exploding in his chest. The surgery was painfully brutal, and the recovery process long, but I am happy to say he has conquered yet another life threatening illness. is printed on recycled paper and by a local Queensland Printing company. Supporting the environment and our great state. I am quite sure not many of us would consider having Cancer to be a gift, but as it turns out in Steve’s case it most certainly was. Had it not been for the Cancer, Steve was at immanent risk, he was literally a ticking time bomb. They form a tribe of battle veterans and fellow pilgrims anointed with knowledge they never wanted, and members of an exclusive club where the price of admission is pain and suffering. It can inspire us to bring forth the best of ourselves in order to overcome the challenges we face and uncover the possibilities for personal growth and transformation. Crisis can tear away our sense of control and shakes our beliefs to the core, it can leave us feeling afraid and stranded in unfamiliar territory. But it can also help us tap into our greatest strengths, persevere through our most difficult times, and find the potential gifts that a crisis can bring.
